Common Causes of Blocked Drains

Slowly draining and backed up pipes can be caused by numerous reasons. The most common include skin cells, dirt debris, hair, lint, oil, fatty foods, dried grease, soap scum, soap build-up, excessive use of toilet paper, feminine products, cotton, cat litter, tree roots, plants and leaves. However, there are three commonly used methods to help drain the backed-up worries away.

1. When in Doubt, Snake the Blockage Out

Snaking a drain involves pushing a snake or auger down a drain and twisting it around to break up the clog. What doesn’t go down the drain attaches to the end of the snake and comes out. The pieces are either pushed down or get caught on the auger.

The cons of this are that it may only be temporary. Because snakes or augers are thin, they may only reach the areas that the snake can get to and not thoroughly clean the drain. Snakes can also cause more harm by pushing the clogged pieces together and making a bigger clog inside if not used properly.

2. Blocked Drain To Open Drain: Hydro-Jetting Cleans & Clears!

Hydro-jetting is a great method to clean drains. However, only professionals should use this method for a few reasons.

First, hydro-jetting sets can be expensive and should be used once a year at most. Second, they are unsafe if not used properly. Third, they can create more damage when using the tool for the first time.

Hydro-jetting uses high pressure water to clean pipelines. The high pressure can even break through tree roots. But if misused, it can also damage and break pipes that are weak, rusty or old. Experienced plumbers have cameras that can see the lines to ensure they are able to use hydro-jetting techniques safely.

Hydro-jetting is a great way to completely clean and unclog pipelines. Not only does hydro-jetting unclog drains, but it also cleans them of most debris. Homeowners should contact a trained professional to get this service for a blocked drain.

3. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar on That Blocked Drain

The best steps to take when using baking soda and vinegar are to:

  • Pour boiling water down the drain
  • Pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain
  • Pour 1-part water to 1-part vinegar (1 cup of each) down the drain
  • Cover the drain with a drain stopper and wait 5 minutes
  • After 5 minutes pour boiling water down the drain

This creates bubbles that will help release the clog, and the pressure that builds up helps push the clog down. This may help clogs closer to the surface but may not entirely clear the clog, especially if it is too far down the pipe.
